ITTA BENA, Miss. (March 27, 2019) - Senior Frederick Spencer led Mississippi Valley State baseball to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Bulldogs of Tougaloo College Wednesday at the MVSU Baseball Field. Spencer struck out one, walked one and surrendered no runs against the Bulldogs.
MVSU improves their overall record to 6-9 while Tougaloo drops to 5-19. Despite being held to only four hits after playing their second game in less than 24-hours, the Delta Devils played solid defense. Tuesday night, MVSU battled SEC foe Mississippi State and suffered an 18-5 defeat.
Today Spencer's arm and baserunning ability led MVSU to their fourth win in their last five outings.
In the second inning, Spencer drew a walk and then stole second base. Senior Marshall Parrish moved him to third on a single to left field and then Spencer scored on the next play crossing home plate while an out was made on a rundown.
Spencer's run was the only score in the game as the Delta Devils defense held the Bulldogs to five hits and no runs. Sophomore Willie Johnson singled to the shortstop in the third inning and redshirt sophomore Billy Leflore singled to center field in the eighth inning.
MVSU heads to Huntsville, Ala. for a three-game weekend series with Alabama A&M beginning on Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m.

On today's game…
"We came out today and didn't have a lot of energy because we played at a big venue last night. I don't know what their actual numbers were, but we had a pretty good crowd. Getting back late last night and coming back today early kind of had an effect on our energy. But we battled all day and it started mainly with Fred on the mound. He pitched a pretty good game. He got ahead of just about everybody. I don't think he pitched no more than 85 or 86 pitches for a nine-inning ball game and that's pretty good…"
Senior Pitcher Frederick Spencer
On how it felt picking up the victory…
"It felt great actually getting my first win of the season. I just tried to go out, hit my spots and let my defense work for me."
