Itta Bena, Miss. – The 2011-12 Mississippi Valley State Men's Basketball team were one win away from becoming the first Southwestern Athletic Conference team to finish conference play with an 18-0 record. The 17-game winning streak that began January 3, 2012 against the University of Arkansas at Pine-Bluff was one of the longest streaks in the country, at that time.

Despite losing to UAPB in the last game of the regular season, the Delta Devils went on to win the SWAC Tournament and claim a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Mississippi Valley State opened the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio with a game against Western Kentucky. Former President of the United States, Barack Obama was in attendance to watch the Delta Devils take the lead at halftime. Kevin Burwell, a native of Philadelphia, PA., scored a team high of 20 points but unfortunately, the Delta Devils fell short by a basket losing 59-58.

Throughout the season the team was led by seniors; Paul Crosby a native of Lansing, Michigan who averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds, Terrance Joyner a native of Mendenhall, Mississippi who averaged 12 points per game and Cor-J Cox a native of Washington, North Carolina who averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game.
