JERSEY CITY, N.J. – MVSU running back Caleb Johnson continues to bring in the hardware as the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences High School product was named an FCS Sophomore All-American by HERO Sports Monday morning.
Â
The redshirt sophomore from Memphis, Tennessee had a season for the ages in the fall of 2021, being named to the All-SWAC Second Team and was a C Spire Conerly Award Finalist while racking up 1,039 yards from scrimmage.
Â
Number three in Green and White was an absolute stud out of the backfield for Running Backs Coach Dwyan Luckey, exploding for 1,004 rushing yards (14th in NCAA) for an average of 91.3 per game (18th in NCAA) and eight scores on the ground (47th in NCAA). He became Valley's first 1,000-yard rusher in a single season since Corey Holmes rumbled for 1,205 yards and ten touchdowns in 2000.
Â
The versatile ballcarrier also accumulated 35 yards over eight receptions plus a touchdown as a receiver as well.
Â
His best individual performance of the campaign was in the season finale at SWAC West Champion Prairie View A&M where he went off for a career-high 193 yards on 40 totes (4.8 yards per carry) and a pair of scores on his way to being selected as the BOXTOROW National Player of the Week on November 29.
