Mississippi Valley State Overview
Head Coach Lindsey Hunter's unit has thrived off forcing turnovers, placing 45th in the nation with an average of 16.08 errors caused per contest and a turnover margin that ranks third in the league (2.2).
Robert Carpenter has been the go-to scorer for MVSU, dropping 17 points a night to trail only FAMU's M.J. Randolph in the conference who puts up 19 on average. He also slots in fourth in the SWAC for free throw percentage (78.9%) and three-pointers per game (2.27), fifth regarding field-goal percentage (37.1%), and tenth for blocks (1.09).
Caleb Hunter is the primary deep threat for the Green and White, although Devin Gordon might have something to say about that after his 32-point, nine-three-pointer explosion Wednesday evening. Hunter ranks third in the league with an average of 2.33 makes from downtown.
Elijah Davis continues his role of a selfless ballplayer, putting together 3.6 assists per contest and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.48 to place fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for both categories.
Scouting The Opponent: Prairie View A&M Panthers
Prairie View has been on a COVID pause for over two weeks now and have yet to play since a December 22 road trip to Wichita State. That has forced the Panthers to forfeit its first two conference games versus Grambling State and Southern while still searching for its first victory of the season.
This game will be a battle of strengths as PVAMU slots just one spot ahead of Valley in the turnovers forced department at 44th (16.10) and has snatched the 18th-most steals in the country (9.9 a game).
Preseason All-SWAC First Team selection Jawaun Daniels tops A&M in scoring (13.4), rebounds (4.0) and three-pointers (14) to go along with a 40.9 field-goal percentage.
DeWayne Cox has been a defensive magician for PV, headlining the swarming defense with the sixth-highest steals per game average in the NCAA at 2.80 a night.
If the game comes down to a battle of free throws, Prairie View will have a significant advantage if either of William Douglas or D'Rell Roberts step to the stripe as they rank first and second in the league for free throw percentage at 85.7% and 80.4%, respectively.
