Delta Devils Falter Late Versus Braves

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University football program held a high-powered Alcorn offense to just 14 points through three quarters but a 16-point fourth spurred the Braves to a 30-7 victory.

  • Caleb Johnson had a career night as a receiver, posting a personal and team-best 48 yards through the air including a career-long 44-yard touchdown reception, his second score as a route runner at Valley. He also led the Delta Devils on the ground with a game-high 64 yards, combining for 102 yards from scrimmage on the evening.
 
  • Jamari Jones contributed a passer rating north of 125, completing 13 passes for 151 yards and the touchdown to Johnson, as well as 24 yards with his legs.
 
  • Ronnie Thomas saw his six-game sack streak end but got to extend his tackle for loss string to seven straight by knifing through the line for a three-yard loss. He also tied with Kenneth Martin for the game's highest tackle total with seven apiece while pressuring the quarterback with his first ever multi-QB hurry outing.
 
  • For the second time in three weeks, MVSU was able to turn away the opposition at the goal line with a forced fumble as Jamison Lindsey recovered the loose pigskin, the first of his career.
 
  • Deangelo Wagoner had a solid night with a season-best 39 receiving yards plus a season-long 28-yarder, Cobie Bates grabbed a career-high four catches for 21 yards and DePhabian Fant averaged 8.3 yards per rush for a personal-best 25 yards.
 
  • Five different defenders logged a tackle for loss as Thomas, Martin, Deione Reed, Jalen Bell, and Lucas Banks each notched one with Banks' being his first as a Delta Devil.
 
The Devils head to Montgomery for a date with the Alabama State Hornets on Saturday, October 15 at 2 p.m. inside ASU Stadium.
