MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Mississippi Valley State Diamond Devils took the lead late and conquered Alabama State Hornets, 7-6, on Friday afternoon at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
The game was tied at six with the Diamond Devils batting in the top of the ninth when Dreylin Holmes hit a solo homer.
Bats blistered as the Diamond Devils collected ten hits as the Hornets tallied eight in the high-scoring game.
MVSU put up three runs in the fifth inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Ty Washington and Davon Mims.
Zachery Sigmon was the winning pitcher for the Diamond Devils. The right-hander surrendered zero runs on zero hits over three innings.
Calvin McClendon started the game for MVSU. The pitcher went six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out one.
MVSU racked up ten hits in the game. Narvin Booker, Victor Figueroa, and Holmes all had multiple hits. Holmes, Figueroa, and Booker all had two hits each.
"We put it all together," said Head Coach Milton Barney. "McClendon gave us a good start on the mound, and Sigmon came in and attacked the zone behind him. Dreylin Holmes came through big for us like he has all year in the ninth inning with the homerun to take the lead."
