JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State Diamond Devils ran off with the lead late in the game in a 7-6 victory over Jackson St on Sunday afternoon at Braddy Field.Â
The Diamond Devils were down 6-5 in the top of the ninth inning when Kameron Byrd singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. MVSU collected 12 hits, while Jackson State tallied ten. MVSU put up five runs in the sixth inning. The offensive onslaught by MVSU was led by Kyndell Dolphin, Maury Weaver, Davione Hull, and Dreylin Holmes, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Dolphin went for the long ball in the sixth inning.Â
The Diamond Devils tallied 12 hits. Victor Figueroa, Dolphin, Hull, and Byrd each collected multiple hits for Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. Figueroa led Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils with three hits in three at-bats. Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Ty Washington had the most chances in the field with seven.
Zachery Sigmon was the winning pitcher for the Diamond Devils. The right-hander lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out three.
Calvin McClendon started the game for MVSU. McClendon lasted four and third innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking zero.
"I am really proud of how we came out and fought today," said Head Coach Milton Barney. "We could have chose the east route and quit, but that's not who we are."
