Delta Devils Drop to Statesmen in the 2023 Delta Classic

CLEVELAND, MISS. – Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-2 on the season with the 35-7 loss on Saturday night against Delta State.

Delta State received the opening kickoff and marched to the MVSU 5-yard line, where MVSU's defense held them to kick a field goal with 11:52 remaining in the first.

MVSU went three-and-out, but the Valley defense forced DSU to turn the ball over on downs on their next drive. Punts on the next three drives would give Delta State the ball just before the end of the second quarter. Delta State would add points at the start of the second with a 24-yard field goal to make it 6-0 with Delta State leading.

MVSU's offense found a rhythm in the second quarter going 11 plays for 58 yds with a Quarterback run from Ty'Jarian Williams to have Valley leading 7-6 at halftime.

The Delta Devils got the ball to start the second half but were forced to punt after a three-and-out. 

MVSU did not score again in the second half. Delta State would score on four more possessions in the second half to win the game 35-7.

OFFENSIVE NOTABLES: 
Ty'Jarian Williams completed 12 of his 15 pass attempts for 76 yards and 1 rushing Touchdown.
- Kerrick Ross caught 5 passes for 41 yards.

DEFENSIVE NOTABLES:
Jayren Fox led the way with a team high 10 tackles, including 1tackle for loss.
- Kalib Alexander added 9 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss.
- Christian Fagan also recording 7 tackles.

SPECIAL TEAM NOTABLES:
Alexander Davis punted for 356 yards.
- Anthony Turnage kicked for 114 yards on 2 kickoffs.
- Bobby Shanklin returned 3 punts for 40 yards.

UP NEXT 

The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils will take on the North Carolina Central University Eagles in the Circle City Classic on Saturday September 23, 2023 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
