Benny Hernandez Powers MVSU in Win Over Alabama A&M

ITTA BENA, MS. – Benny Hernandez hit two homeruns and drove in five RBI in a 13-10 conference win over Alabama A&M University on Saturday at Magnolia Field.

Starting pitcher Quin Bennett earned the win for MVSU. Bennett gave up 10 hits, and seven earned runs over five innings, striking out two and walking one.

MVSU was led offensively by Benny Hernandez who went 2-for-4 at the plate with two homeruns, five RBI, two runs scored, and a walk to help lead MVSU over Alabama A&M University.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
MVSU jumped out to take an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Will Menendez RBI single, and Benny Hernandez homered to left field.
 
Alabama A&M trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the second.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, MVSU added six more runs on the board to extend the lead to 11-2.
 
AAMU scored five runs in the fifth inning on two homeruns. AAMU closed the gap to 11-7.
 
The Bulldogs used a three-run seventh, cutting the deficit to just one run, 11-10. 
AAMU loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth but grounded out to the pitcher, Jesus Campa, who worked in relief, to seal the inning.
 
The Delta Devils pushed the advantage to 13-10 with a pair of runs scored in the bottom of the eighth.


GAME NOTES
  • Mississippi Valley State accumulated 9 hits in the game.
  • Will Menendez went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Dreylin Holmes went 2-for-3 with one homerun, three RBI, and two runs scored.
  • MVSU as a team drew seven walks.
  • Mississippi Valley State's highest-scoring inning was in the third when six runs were pushed across the plate.

The Diamond Devils will face the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University in the final game of the three-game series for Senior Day on Sunday, May 12 at 1 p.m. at Magnolia Field in Itta Bena, MS.
