In front of a dedicated home crowd at Rice-Totten Stadium, the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils fought hard but ultimately fell 42-21 to Alcorn State on Saturday night. The Delta Devils came out with determination, matching Alcorn State stride for stride in the first half but were unable to keep pace as the game wore on.
Alcorn State struck early with a 47-yard field goal and a quick touchdown, but the Delta Devils responded. Quarterback Ty'Jarian Williams orchestrated an impressive 9-play, 76-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard rushing touchdown, bringing MVSU within three points at 10-7.
In the second quarter, DePhabian Fant brought the Delta Devils back into the game with a 10-yard rushing touchdown after another well-executed drive, narrowing the deficit to 24-14 at halftime. The MVSU defense stood tall at times, with notable contributions from Jordan Bussey and Deeshari Keith, each registering multiple tackles.
However, Alcorn State's offense proved too powerful in the second half. Despite a resilient defensive effort, the Delta Devils couldn't close the gap, conceding 18 points in the final two quarters. MVSU did manage a late touchdown when Williams connected with Cameron Nelson for a 10-yard score.
Despite the loss, the Delta Devils showcased their potential, especially in the first half, and will look to build on this performance as they continue their season.
