BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men's basketball program was gifted a late Christmas present for a performance it had the week of the holidays as Michael James received a bloody nose in a hard-fought game at West Virginia but soldiered on before torching Oklahoma en route to his third SWAC Newcomer of the Week recognition.
James, a Junior guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, led MVSU with an average of 19 points, 3.5 free throws, and a 41.2% field goal percentage while making all of his seven attempts from the line.
The potential front runner for Conference Newcomer of the Year also rounded up four rebounds (2.0 per game) plus a trio of assists (1.5 per game) while only turning the ball over three times despite being the primary ball handler and playing 76-of-80 (95%) minutes.
Valley State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference competition on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Itta Bena versus the Alabama State Hornets.
