Delta Devils Battle Florida A&M in Four-Set Home Match

THE DELTA | Mississippi Valley State University volleyball showed resilience Friday afternoon inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex, taking the second set from Florida A&M before falling to the Rattlers in four sets, 16-25, 25-22, 11-25, 14-25.

The Delta Devils moved to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Florida A&M improved to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in league action.

MVSU's strongest stretch came in the second set, where the Delta Devils responded after dropping the opener. Valley produced 13 kills while hitting .250 in the frame and held off a late Florida A&M rally to secure a 25-22 set victory. Taylor Wooten delivered five kills in the second set alone, while Aubrie Walker added three kills as MVSU evened the match at one set apiece.

Wooten paced the Delta Devils offensively with a team-high 10 kills on 27 attacks, finishing with a .259 hitting percentage. Walker supplied an efficient performance at the net, totaling eight kills on 16 attempts with just two errors for a .375 hitting percentage. Aniyah Moore added six kills, while Hannah St. Croix finished with three.

Valley utilized a balanced setting attack throughout the afternoon. Erin Mims recorded 13 assists, while Kameryn Browne added 10 assists. The Delta Devils also generated six service aces, highlighted by Dashaun Pinesette's three aces, with Ashlynn Hawkins, Moore and Browne each adding one.

Defensively, libero Taylor Wilson collected eight digs, while Hawkins and Pinesette each contributed six. Wooten added four digs to go along with her team-leading offensive effort. Valley finished the match with 32 kills, 30 assists, six service aces and 38 digs.

Florida A&M was led by LaDonna Trantham, who finished with 20 kills and a .486 hitting percentage. The Rattlers totaled 55 kills and hit .292 as a team.

The match featured 16 ties and seven lead changes in front of an announced crowd of 215 at the Harrison HPER Complex.

Mississippi Valley State remains at home and will return to the court Sunday, Oct. 4, when the Delta Devils host Bethune-Cookman inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
