COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State's men's and women's tennis teams combined for five singles victories, including four comeback wins in deciding match tiebreakers, against Mississippi University for Women on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Garrett Courts. The Delta Devils dropped two narrow decisions 4-3, 5-2.
Julien Cordeau led the Delta Devils at No. 1 singles, rallying past David Gimenez, 2-6, 6-0, [10-7]. After dropping the opening set, Cordeau swept the second set without surrendering a game and finished the comeback with a 10-7 victory in the match tiebreaker.
Juan Alejandro Rozo added a win at No. 2 singles, taking the first set against Luis Oliva, 7-5, before Oliva retired from the match.
Jorge Navaratte Prats completed MVSU's sweep of the top three singles positions with a 6-7, 6-2, [10-1] victory over Ian Arrese. He rebounded from an opening-set tiebreak loss to take the second set, then allowed just one point in the deciding match tiebreaker.
In men's doubles, Cordeau and Rozo fell 6-4 to Gimenez and Oliva at the No. 1 position. The W secured the doubles point and received forfeit wins at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles to account for its four team points.
Ruramai Nyamakura and
Claudia Lopez delivered a pair of comeback victories at the top of the Delta Devils singles lineup. At No. 1, Nyamakura defeated Laura Camara, 2-6, 6-0, [10-5], answering an opening-set loss with a shutout in the second set before claiming the match tiebreaker.
Lopez followed the same comeback path at No. 2 singles against Orianna Roldan. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Lopez took the second set, 6-2, and edged Roldan, 11-9, in the deciding match tiebreaker for a 6-7, 6-2, [11-9] victory.
The W earned the women's doubles point and received forfeits at Nos. 3 through 6 singles. MVSU won all five contested singles matches across the two team competitions and finished 4-0 in deciding match tiebreakers.
