THE DELTA | Mississippi Valley State volleyball closed out its weekend SWAC homestand Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 3-0 setback to Prairie View A&M inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
The Delta Devils continued to battle throughout the afternoon and turned in their strongest performance in the third set before Prairie View escaped with the 25-11, 25-13, 25-23 victory. MVSU finished the match with 22 kills, 33 digs, 18 assists, three service aces and four total team blocks.
Aubrie Walker paced the Valley offense with a team-high seven kills while adding seven digs.
Taylor Wooten contributed four kills, five digs, a service ace and two block assists, while
Aniyah Moore recorded four kills, one ace and helped anchor the defensive effort at the net.
Brooklyn Brunt also finished with four kills on nine attacks.
Kameryn Browne directed the offense with a team-high 13 assists to go along with three digs, while
Erin Mims added five assists.
Prairie View established control early in the opening set, using an early scoring run to create separation before taking the frame, 25-11. Valley produced seven kills in the opener but was unable to overcome nine attacking errors.
The Panthers carried the momentum into the second set and built another early advantage. MVSU showed flashes at the service line behind aces from Browne and Moore, but Prairie View maintained its lead and secured the set, 25-13.
Mississippi Valley State responded with its best stretch of volleyball in the third. The Delta Devils produced 11 kills while hitting .179, their best attacking percentage of the match. Valley erased an early deficit and took a 7-5 advantage before the teams traded points throughout a tightly contested frame.
Walker delivered four of her seven kills in the third set, while Brunt added three. Moore chipped in two kills, and Wooten added two as the Delta Devils remained within striking distance throughout the frame. The set featured 15 ties and six lead changes, including a 23-23 deadlock in the closing moments. Prairie View, however, secured the final two points to close the match, 25-23.
The result moves Mississippi Valley State to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in SWAC play.
