Wooten Leads Valley Effort as MVSU Falls to Jackson State in SWAC Matchup

THE DELTA | Mississippi Valley State volleyball battled Jackson State Wednesday evening inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex, but the Delta Devils were unable to slow the Tigers in a 3-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference setback.

Jackson State claimed the match by set scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-16. The result moved MVSU to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in SWAC play, while Jackson State improved to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

Taylor Wooten paced the Valley attack with a team-high seven kills while adding six digs and a block assist. Aubrie Walker followed with five kills, six digs, one solo block and two block assists, while Brooklyn Brunt finished with four kills and two block assists.

Setter Kameryn Browne directed the offense with 16 assists and added a service ace, while Dashaun Pinesette provided a spark from the service line with a team-high two aces to go along with five digs. Defensively, Aniyah Moore recorded one solo block and three block assists as the Delta Devils finished with 6.0 team blocks, holding an advantage over Jackson State's 5.0.

The opening set featured five ties and four lead changes as Valley traded points with Jackson State early. Wooten helped keep MVSU within striking distance with four first-set kills, but the Tigers eventually created separation and closed the frame, 25-14.

Mississippi Valley State showed resilience in the second set after falling behind 9-4. Kills from Brunt, Wooten, Hannah St. Croix and Walker helped the Delta Devils pull within one at 9-8. MVSU continued to battle throughout the frame, including back-to-back points late that cut the margin to 23-17, before Jackson State secured the final two points for a 25-17 win.

In the third, Valley continued to fight behind contributions from Walker, Wooten, Browne and St. Croix. MVSU registered seven kills in the frame and improved its side out percentage to 52 percent, but Jackson State closed out the match with a 25-16 decision.

Overall, the Delta Devils produced 19 kills, 28 digs, three service aces and six team blocks on the night.
