Delta Devils close out season with 19-7 loss to Hornets

Box Score
ITTA BENA -- Mississippi Valley State was unable to capture a win in its final game of the season, falling 19-7 to Alabama State at Rice-Totten Stadium in front of 1,873 fans.

Prior to kickoff, all of Valley's seniors were honored for their services to the MVSU football program in front of the home crowd. Despite the added motivation of senior day, the Delta Devils struggled to find the end zone all afternoon, as their only touchdown came on a 1-yard run by quarterback Patrick Ivy.

Ivy made a costly interception at the end of the second quarter that resulted in touchdown for Alabama State, which put MVSU down 12-7 at the half. In the second half, MVSU's offense remained stagnant as the running backs combined for only 67 rushing yards and Patrick Ivy struggled, throwing another interception.

On the defensive side of the ball, MVSU maintained it's reputation for being stubborn and rugged as they only allowed 75 rushing yards and 128 passing yards. Senior defensive tackle Robert Simpson finished the game with a game-high 10 tackles and a sack, senior linebacker Antonio Benson added 9 tackles, and junior cornerback Avery Boykin continued his stellar play by grabbing his sixth interception of the season. MVSU's Letrey Jones added two interceptions of his own.

Quarterback Patrick Ivy ended the game with 211 passing yards and 58 yards rushing while Julian Stafford was his target of the day, finishing with six receptions for 84 yards. Senior wide receivers Kenneth Dabney and Richard Drake made some big plays for the Delta Devils as well, as Dabney had four receptions for 46 yards and Drake had two receptions for 37 yards.

ASU's Daniel Duhart completed 16-of-34 passes for 128 yards, a TD and three interceptions.
