MVSU drops home game to Southern

The MVSU Delta Devils suffered another heartbreaking defeat at home against the Southern University, by a score of 7-17 on Saturday afternoon.

Box Score ITTA BENA -- It was another heartbreaking defeat Saturday for the Mississippi Valley State football team.

The Delta Devils had a dominating defense effort, but failed to score enough points in a 17-7 loss to Southern University at Rice-Totten Stadium.

"We had a lot of missed opportunities," said MVSU head coach Karl Morgan. "We missed a field goal, we botched a field goal, and it's hard to win when you do those kinds of things. We're not good enough right now but we have to keep fighting. We have a week off to regroup but we have to finish these seven weeks off strong".

MVSU (0-4, 0-2 SWAC) and Southern (2-2, 2-0 SWAC) seemed to be in a strictly defensive game, as both teams remained scoreless after the end of the first quarter. Southern led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a 22-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Although the game was close in score at halftime, MVSU once again saw the game slip away in the second half. Dray Joseph and his Southern Jaguars came out with a hurry-up offense to put the Delta Devils on their heels in the fourth quarter. On their first drive of the fourth, Joseph connected with Lee Doss for a 65-yard reception that put the Jaguars on MVSU's goal line. After Joseph's deep throw, he handed it off to Lenard Tillery for a 5-yard touchdown run. After Southern's first drive that put them up 10-0, MVSU's offense continued to struggle as Valley's Patrick Ivy threw an interception on Southern's 28-yard line.

The Jaguars capitalized on MVSU's turnover by connecting with Doss on a 60-yard TD strike. The Delta Devils were held scoreless until less than a minute left when Patrick Ivy rushed for a 3-yard touchdown run.

Ivy finished 21-of-38 for 188 yards and an interception. Meanwhile, Julian Stafford paced MVSU with seven receptions for 72 yards.

The key standouts on MVSU's defense were linebacker Brandon Pow, who finished with 12 tackles (4.5 for loss) and two sacks, and Sean Fugate who had a sack and a forced fumble.

The Delta Devils will be back in action in Oct. 5 when they travel to Alabama A&M.
