Box Score LORMAN, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team withstood a shuffled schedule due to a bomb threat at the Itta Bena campus to upend rival Alcorn State, 70-55, at the Dave Whitney HPER Complex.
In a game that was originally scheduled to take place at the Leflore County Civic Center in Greenwood, the Devilettes and Lady Braves were forced to move the much-awaited contest to Alcorn's campus due to a bomb threat to the Valley campus and the Civic Center, the temporary home of the MVSU basketball teams.
Despite the quick change in venue, the Devilettes (5-10, 4-0 SWAC) responded by gaining its fourth straight conference win to stay undefeated in the SWAC. The win sets up a showdown against the only two undefeated teams in the SWAC when MVSU and Southern meet on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Leflore County Civic Center. That game was originally set for Monday, but was rescheduled due to the bomb threat.
On Saturday, Alcorn (1-15, 0-5 SWAC) the Lady Braves led 19-18 with 7:05 left in the first half but it would be the last time Alcorn would get that close to the Devilettes. From that point on, MVSU went on a 18-4 run before halftime. The run was sparked by a flurry of 3's by Olivia Kennedy who had 12 points at the half.
Even with a 36-23 halftime lead, Valley didn't take their feet off the gas. Joncyee Sanders scored 12 points in the second half to keep the Lady Braves at bay.
DeRita Silas led MVSU with 15 points off the bench while Kennedy and Sanders added 14 points apiece. Ashley Beals chipped in 12 points, two blocks and four steals.
Tierro Frost paced Alcorn with 20 points.
Valley shot 41 percent and made 18-of-30 free throws.
