Women Win Second Straight SWAC Tournament Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. – The #9 seed Mississippi Valley State University women's basketball program has won a game in the SWAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in more than a decade (2011-12 and 2012-13) after dispatching the #12 seed Prairie View A&M Panthers in the First Round, 63-49.

Valley destroyed PVAMU on the glass, racking up a +23 (59-36) rebounding margin.

  • Janiya Jones translated a career-best 34 minutes into a season-most five buckets, four from downtown Atlanta (4-for-10, 40%), en route to a MVSU-high 14 points as well as a half-dozen boards.

  • Ja'la Douglas was the third Devilette to break some kind of benchmark, snatching a career-high three steals and a campaign-high six rebounds.

  • Jaeda Murphy fronted Mississippi Valley in the assist category (5) on top of a solid 13 points.

  • Sydnei Marshall reached double figures on offense courtesy of scoring a dozen.
