Box Score HOUSTON, Texas -- Four minutes into the second half of Saturday's game, it looked as if Texas Southern would be easing to a victory over the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team.
The Lady Tigers held a 23-point lead with 16:31 left in the game, but watched as the Devilettes cut the lead to as low as three with five minutes on the clock.
TSU (8-9, 5-1 SWAC) responded by holding Valley (5-12, 4-2 SWAC) scoreless over the final five minutes en route to a 65-55 victory.
"We had great energy coming out in the second half," said MVSU coach Elvis Robinson. "I think they showed the heart of a champion tonight."
TSU led 39-25 at halftime and went on a 11-4 to start the second half. Then, the Devilettes mounted a comeback by attacking the paint with forwards Ashley Beals and Jasmyne Sanders.
MVSU's A'Shanti Weathers hit a pair of 3-pointers that helped cut the deficit to five before Joncyee Sanders' free throws cut TSU's lead to 58-55 with five minutes left. It, however, would be the last points of the game for the Devilettes, who watched the Lady Tigers go on a 7-0 run to end the game.
Joncyee Sanders paced Valley with 16 points and seven assists. Jasmyne Sanders added 12 points while Ashley Beals chipped in 11.
Jazzmin Parker, who finished with a game-high 24 points, was one of four TSU players to score in double-figures.
The Devilettes will be at Prairie View on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
