Box Score GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State entered Monday night's game against Grambling State hoping to end a four-game skid.
And the Devilettes needed to stop the SWAC's leading scorer Joanna Miller to do it.
And through most of the game, it looked as if the Devilettes would get it done. But the Lady Tigers outscored the Devilettes 40-30 in the second half and went on to defeat Valley, 67-59, at the Leflore County Civic Center.
MVSU (5-15, 4-5 SWAC) led 47-43 with 10 minutes left following a 3-point play by Ashley Beals. GSU, however, responded with a 8-0 run in a 3-minute span to take the lead and the momentum.
The Devilettes cut GSU's lead to 63-59 with 1:11 left following a layup by MVSU's Jasmyne Sanders. But that would be as close as Valley would get. Miller made all four of her free throws down the stretch to close out the Devilettes.
Sanders led MVSU with 13 points while Olivia Kennedy added 12 points on four 3's. Ashley Beals came off the bench to chip in 10 points and six rebounds.
Miller paced the Lady Tigers (8-12, 5-4 SWAC) with 29 points on 8-of-14 shots from the field.
Valley shot 39.3 percent, including 6-of-27 shots from behind the 3-point line.
The Devilettes will be back in action Saturday when they host Alabama State at 3 p.m. at the Leflore County Civic Center.
