Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Mississippi Valley State overcame a double-digit second half deficit Saturday to upend Arkansas-Pine Bluff 68-67 in overtime in the final regular season game of the season for both teams.
Christina Reed made one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining that made the difference for the Devilettes (9-20, 8-10 SWAC), who ended a five-game losing streak.
"We needed that a lot," said MVSU head coach Elvis Robinson. "I think the ladies just came out and played hard…We made a couple plays here and there."
The win came at the right time for a Valley team that now will have a No. 6 seed in the SWAC Tournament, which is set for March 11-15 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The Devilettes will face rival Jackson State at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
On Saturday, MVSU shot 50 percent in the second half and made 5-of-6 free throws in overtime. UAPB had one chance with a 3-point heave by Christina Lasane at the end of overtime, but the shot didn't fall.
"This is the kind of win that can propel you well into the tournament," said Robinson, "because you know you can fight back and get a victory."
Jasmyne Sanders led Valley with 17 points and seven rebounds and Ashley Beals -- who made 7-of-9 free throws -- contributed 15 points off the bench. Meanwhile, A'Shanti Weathers chipped in 11 points and Joncyee Sanders filled up the box score with nine points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Lasane paced UAPB with 20 points.
