Box Score NORMAL, Ill. -- Illinois State used a well-balanced attack Saturday night to blank Mississippi Valley State, 62-0, at Hancock Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 10,243.
The Delta Devils were unable to slow down a Redbird team that rushed for 356 yards and had 656 total yards. Saturday marked the first game of the season for Illinois State, which finished 5-6 last season.
The Redbirds scored at least two touchdowns in each quarter, including 21 points in the third period with the final two scores coming on 40 and 47-yard passes.
Early on, Valley made a couple highlight-worthy plays. On the second play of the game, Jerrell Moore had a 24-yard scamper before an interception ended the drive, and later on in the first quarter linebacker Davon Jones picked off ISU quarterback Tre Roberson. But the Delta Devils were never able to capitalize throughout the game.
ISU scored its first two touchdowns in the first quarter on a pair of runs by Roberson and went into halftime sporting a 27-0 lead. Then, a 21-point third quarter by the Redbirds put the Delta Devils away for good.
Valley used four quarterbacks in the game, with Patrick Ivy getting the starting nod for the second straight game. University of Memphis transfer Dontrinell Scott replaced Ivy midway through the first quarter and Quantavius Peterson entered the game late in the second period. Carl Davis also saw action late in the game.
As a team, the Delta Devils passed for 36 yards. Scott went 3-of-3 for nine yards and Ivy completed 2-of-4 passes for 21 yards with an interception.
DeShawn Davis led Valley with 44 rushing yards on seven carries and Julian Stafford had two catches for 21 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Davon Jones had eight tackles (1.5 for loss), a sack and an interception. Also, Charles Moore had a team-high nine tackles.
