JONESBORO, Ark. (February 8, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State track and field wrapped up the indoor regular season taking gold in three events at Scarlet & Black Invitational hosted by Arkansas State on Friday. The Devilettes won the women's shot put and 400m events while the Delta Devils won the men's 400m. In total, MVSU had 12 athletes set personal records, 11 combined top-three finishes, and five season-best marks in their final tune-up prior to indoor conference championships.
Sophomore thrower Tyefah Saunders won the shot put event measuring a personal-best mark of 50-feet 11-inches (15.52m). Saunders cracked the top-50 national rankings in the event at No. 49 and remains at the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference rankings in the shot put.
On the track, sophomore Ajani Williams was victorious in the 400m event running a time of 57.65, moving up to fourth on the conference list. Junior Jala Allen was the runner-up in the 400m with a time of 1:01.20.
MVSU placed second in both the 800m and 3000m. Senior Iyanna Alexander competed in the 800m and finished with a time of 2:25.41 for her top-time of the indoor season. Freshman Rakia Ball ran a personal-best time of 11:58.98 in the 3000m and entered the SWAC's top-10 list in the event at No. 10.
Sophomore Mya Dumpson was third in the 55m hurdles (8.83) and was fourth in the 800m (2:26.20) after running her top 800m time of the indoor season.
A trio had a successful outing in the long jump. Sophomore ZaBasjia Price (4.75m) and Destini Banks (4.72m) both leaped personal-best marks, placing fifth and sixth respectively while senior TraNisha Dukes (3.58m) was seventh with a season-best measure. Price had her second personal record of the evening in the high jump finishing seventh at 1.43m.
On the men's side, MVSU had three place within the top-four spots in the 400m led by freshman Christopher Bailey. Bailey tied his personal best time of 48.70 crossing the finish line in front of fellow teammate senior Laval Davis. Davis was the runner-up with a time of 49.63 and junior Joseph Mitchell (51.50) placed fourth. Currently, Bailey has the fastest 400m time in the conference.
Freshman Stanley Rop was the runner-up in the 3000m with a personal record time of 9:10.09. Rop moved up to third on the SWAC list in the event. Sophomore Jaleel Turner ranks fourth in the conference after placing third in the 800m with a season-best time of 1:57.92. Also competing in the 800m was freshman Maurice Johnson (2:04.27) and junior Nicholas Alexander (2:17.83), both breaking their previous personal records.
In the long jump, sophomore Jamarius Shaw was third notching a personal-best mark of 6.81m. Freshman Kiion Smith led the MVSU throws with a personal record toss of 12.47m placing fifth and freshman William Bradley (11.10m) was sixth.
A pair broke their personal records running in the 55m hurdles event. Freshman Anthony Mosley was fourth with a time of 8.28 seconds and junior D'vante Lundy was fifth at 8.42 seconds.
MVSU track and field will prepare for the upcoming 2019 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on Feb. 14-15.
