BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University football program saw one of its own honored on Monday afternoon as specialist Orlando Fernandez was tabbed as this week's Conference Specialist of the Week for his performance versus Alabama State.
 
Fernandez, a junior from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, has practically been the entire special teams unit during the fall 2021 season, acting as the team's placekicker, punter, and kickoff specialist.
 
Against the Hornets, the Cisco Community College transfer boomed seven punts for an average net of 44.43 yards (311 total) including three kicks of 50-plus yards, three balls downed inside the ASU redzone and a 58-yard skyrocket.
 
On the kicking side of things, he made his lone field goal attempt from 37 yards out, made five of his six PATs (only miss was blocked) and contributed two touchbacks on kickoffs.
 
Fernandez and the Delta Devils conclude its regular season on Saturday, November 27 at 2 p.m. inside Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field, attempting to spoil a Prairie View party as the Panthers need a win or an Alcorn loss to claim the SWAC West Championship.
