ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University athletics program recognizes football's
Jamari Jones and soccer's
McKenzie McCarthy as the MVSU student-athletes of the week.
Jones, a junior quarterback from Fannin, Mississippi, had his best game as a Delta Devil by far with 319 combined yards from scrimmage and three passing touchdowns including two to
Jacory Rankin. The East Mississippi Community College transfer became the first MVSU signal-caller to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2019 (101) to go along with tossing a season-best 218 yards through the air on 13 completions and averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
McCarthy, a senior goalkeeper from Olive Branch, Mississippi, notched a career first heading into her final home match this Friday, logging a shutout on Friday against Alabama A&M to help the Devilettes obtain a scoreless draw. The all-time program saves leader racked up 23 saves (11.5 per match) over two complete game efforts while surrendering just one goal for a save percentage of 95.8% despite being constantly under fire by 54 shots faced.
Football is off this weekend before returning to the gridiron on Thursday, November 3 for a showdown under the Delta lights against Alabama A&M on ESPN U. Soccer concludes its season on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Senior Day where McCarthy,
Rahael Aka-Ety,
Cielo Mazantini,
Aryana Saenz, and manager Morolake Okanlawon at approximately 1:45 p.m.
