BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University football program saved its first and only SWAC weekly award for the season for its best and last performance as senior punter/kicker
Orlando Fernandez netted his third Conference Special Teams Player of the Week accolade of his Delta Devil tenure.
Â
Fernandez, a specialist from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, made both of his field goal attempts from 36 and 26 yards away plus was a perfect 3-for-3 on point after tries. As a punter, the Cisco College transfer helped stifle the Panthers offense by pinning them inside their own 20 three times during his five boots, averaging nearly 40 net yards without a single touchback.
Â
Special Teams Coach
Dwyan Luckey's unit drastically improved from the season prior, especially in the punting department, as Fernandez's net punting average of 40.8 was top-35 in the FCS, nearly 60 spots higher than where they ended the 2021 campaign.
