BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men's and women's cross country programs took home half of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's weekly honors to cap off the regular season as the Devilettes'
Jasmine Mackey, as well as the Delta Devils'
Duncan Koima, each won SWAC Newcomer of the Week with the latter claiming the accolade for the second straight meet.
Â
Mackey, a freshman from Nassau, Bahamas and a product of Teleos Christian High School, left her previous-best time during a 6k race in the dust, literally and figuratively, cruising across the
Choctaw Trails' finish line at a pace of 26:20.00, more than a full minute-and-a-half faster than her old personal record as she led the ladies on the leaderboard with an 83rd place allotment.
Â
Koima, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya and an alumni of Michael Boy's High School, went back-to-back by earning the nod as Newcomer of the Week once again. The first-year runner has finished no lower than tenth in all three of his collegiate meets, coming in at #10 while participating in the Watson Classic with a PR of 25:31.80 to lower his benchmark by approximately 15 seconds.
Â
It is championship week on the course as Mackey and Koima look to lead both of their respective teams to glory in Tallahassee on Monday morning.
