BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men's cross country program saw a student-athlete stake a claim to one of the SWAC's two weekly accolades for the first time in the post COVID-19 era and the first time for a male runner since September 12, 2017, when
Duncan Koima took home the SWAC Newcomer of the Week honor after his performance at the Belhaven Invitational on Saturday morning.
Â
Prior to Wednesday evening's announcement on the conference's social media, the most recent winner hailing from MVSU was Scolasticah Kemei on October 17, 2018 whereas the last male student-athlete to be recognized was Jaleel Turner on September 12, 2017.
Â
Koima, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya and a product of Michael's Boy High School, made it back-to-back podium trips for the Delta Devils, earning the bronze medal with a third place finish via a time of 25:46.19, falling behind only Jackson State's Godfrey Kimutai (SWAC Runner of the Week) and an unattached Braedon Methvin.
Â
The final meet of the regular season will take place in the same location on a new date and with a different host as Valley gets their final warm-up prior to the SWAC Championships on Friday, October 17 as participants in the Watson Classic.
