MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Mississippi Valley State University women's basketball program's Associate Head Coach
Ashley Shields will be getting inducted into the Southwest Tennessee Community College Hall of Fame on Friday evening.
"Real Deal" Shields spent one season at STCC but it was magical, guiding the Red and Blue to a 26-2 (92.9%) mark, ultimately ending the season with a #13 ranking in the NJCAA.
As for that fateful 2006-07 campaign, the First Team All-American and unanimous TCCAA Player of the Year led the nation in scoring (27.6) while averaging a double-double (11.3 rebounds) in addition to 6.6 assists and 4.1 steals per game, all while fronting the team in field goal percentage (55.8%), three-point percentage (44.3%) as well as four triple-doubles.
In an unprecedented event, she became the first JUCO student-athlete to ever be drafted directly into the WNBA when she was taken eighth overall by the Houston Comets in the 2007 draft.
We here at MVSU congratulate Coach Shields on her enshrinement into the Saluqis' Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor.
