The Mississippi Valley State University men and women's track & field teams put forth a determined effort at the highly competitive 2024 Bulldog Relays. Facing off against NCAA Division I and II powerhouses, the Delta Devils displayed heart, hustle, and grit across several events.
Sprints & Hurdles
- Lemareae Payne was the standout sprinter for MVSU, competing in three events. She clocked 13.00 seconds in the 100m, 25.18 seconds in the 200m (significantly better than her seed time of 27.24), and 1:04.57 in the 400m.
- Laila Stapleton also showed versatility, running 13.88 in the 100m, 28.42 in the 200m, 1:07.78 in the 400m, and competing in the long jump, finishing with a mark of 3.99m.
- Cayden Fluellen continued to push her limits in the 400m hurdles with a 1:11.10 finish and clocked 16.22 in the 100m hurdles.
- Jackie Kambere completed the 400m in 1:10.69 and 800m in 2:39.29, showing consistent endurance in middle-distance events.
Middle Distance
- Jasmine Mackey showed strong potential with 1:01.69 in the 400m and a solid 2:32.81 in the 800m.
- Jamison Ware ran 2:34.41 in the 800m.
Jumps
- Raine Jenkins placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 4.94m and delivered a strong 10.95m effort in the triple jump, placing 8th overall.
- Stapleton also participated in the long jump as noted earlier.
Throws
- Aniyah Thomas represented in all three major throwing events:
- Shot put: 10.45m
- Discus: 31.39m
- Hammer throw: 33.14m
- Jaylia Westbrook competed in shot put (8.44m) and recorded a foul in the discus.
- Danielle Wilson competed in shot put (10.38m), hammer throw (40.83m), and javelin (26.68m).
Men's Highlights
100 Meter Dash
- Emilio Blackbourne clocked a solid 10.83 seconds, placing 22nd in a highly competitive field.
- Kevaughn Goldson followed closely at 11.05, with strong showings from teammates:
200 Meter Dash
- Kevaughn Goldson and Geoffrey McBurrows continued their sprint efforts, posting times of 22.03 and 22.04, respectively.
- Fletcher Devon contributed a time of 22.48, adding to the team's depth in sprint events.
Though MVSU did not claim podium finishes, the team displayed commendable progression, with personal improvements noted in multiple events. The meet offered invaluable experience competing against elite collegiate athletes and set a strong foundation for the rest of the outdoor season.
