BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University men's basketball program has now seen Michael James win the SWAC's Newcomer of the Week award in 5 of the 16 weeks (31.3%) it has been given out, claiming this edition of the hardware alongside Alabama A&M's Koron Davis.
James, a junior guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, gutting it was the catalyst to snapping the squad's losing streak as he snatched the ball away from Texas Southern with less than 5 seconds remaining and banked an easy layup off the glass to lift Valley over the Tigers, 72-71, on Senior Night.
The Meridian Community College transfer led the Delta Devils in free throw percentage (92.9% / 13-of-14), minutes (39.6 / 119), points (21.0 / 63), field goals (7.3 / 22), free throws (4.3 / 13), assists (3.7 / 11), three-pointers (2.0 / 6) and steals (1.7 / 5).
He also set a new season-high for rebounds with eight at Grambling State while shooting 37.3% (22-for-59) from the floor and averaging 4.7 boards over the three-game extended weekend.
The Green and White have only Arkansas-Pine Bluff over the next six days as they head to the Natural State for a 5 p.m. showdown on Saturday.
