Box Score BATON ROUGE -- Southern University proved why its the hottest team in the conference Monday night.
The Jaguars (12-6, 6-0 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley State 88-54 at the FG Clark Activity Center in front of an annouced crowd of 1,641.
Southern seemed to do everything right, making 61 percent of its shots, out-rebounding MVSU 39 to 25 and got 43 points from its bench. Malcolm Miller accounted for 28 of those 43 bench points for the Jaguars. He made 5 of 6 three-pointers and added 10 rebounds.
Davon Usher paced the Delta Devils with 17 points and was the lone MVSU player in double-figures. MVSU struggled from the field, shooting 32.1 percent. Southern outscored Valley 40 to 20 in the paint.
Darius Tomlin had nine points off the bench for the Delta Devils while Matt Smith chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
MVSU will return home Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host Prairie View A&M.
