Box Score ITTA BENA -- Matt Smith scored a career-high 21 points Saturday to lead Mississippi Valley State to its second conference victory of the season after a 73-64 victory over Prairie View A&M.
Smith, a freshman from Jackson, Tenn., made 8 of 10 shots and had a team-high eight rebounds as MVSU (2-14, 2-4 SWAC) ended a three-game losing streak.
MVSU's Darryl Marshall was one point shy of tying his career high with 20 points, converting all five shots and 7 of 11 free throws. It marked the fourth time this season he has scored in double-figures. The Memphis native also had a game-high five assists.
MVSU led 35-26 at halftime, but Prairie View (5-10, 3-3 SWAC) cut the lead to one points, 53-52, with 4:50 to play. Davon Usher then scored five quick points that sparked a 12-2 Valley run to end the game.
Jourdan DeMuynck led Prairie View with 16 points while Carl Blair and Demondre Chapman chipped in 10 each.
Usher, Marcus Johnson and Cameron Dobbs all chipped in eight points apiece for the Delta Devils, who shot 47.9 percent on the night.
MVSU will be back at home Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Texas Southern.
