Delta Devils fall 60-57 at JSU

Box Score ITTA BENA -- Davon Usher's potential game-winning shot rimmed out Saturday at Jackson State as the Delta Devils fell 60-57 against its bitter rival in front of an annouced crowd of 6,315.

The loss ended MVSU's three-game win streak over the Tigers and marked the Delta Devils' second straight defeat.

MVSU (2-16, 2-6 SWAC) trailed by as much as 14 points in the second half but cut the lead to three, 51-48, with two minutes remaining. After JSU stretched the lead to six with under a minute left, Cameron Dobbs entered the game and immediately riled up MVSU fans with a three-point dagger to cut the Tigers' lead to 58-55 with 21 seconds left.

Valley's Davon Usher made it a little more interesting when he converted two free throws to cut the lead to one, 58-57, with 15 seconds remaining.

After JSU (3-14, 3-6 SWAC) put two more points on the board, MVSU had one last opportunity, but Usher's three-point heave rimmed out.

Usher led the Delta Devils with 26 points, marking his fifth time scoring at least 20 points. Matt Smith earned his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. MVSU shot 34.4 percent from the field and made 12 of 19 free throw attempts.

Christian Williams led JSU with 15 points while Jeff Stubbs added 13 and Derrell Taylor chipped in 10. JSU made 42.6 percent of its shots.

MVSU will be back in action Monday at Grambling State at 7:30 p.m.
