GRAMBLING, La. -- Grambling State is still searching for its first victory of the season after Mississippi Valley State earned its largest victory of the year after a 65-50 victory over the Tigers.
MVSU (3-16, 3-6 SWAC) led by as much as 20 points in the second half and held the lead for the entire game. The Delta Devils also scored 26 points off Grambling (0-18, 0-9 SWAC) turnovers.
"We took care of the ball in the first half (and) I think we did a heck of a job creating the intensity," said MVSU head coach Chico Potts. "We attacked the paint….I think we played a complete game tonight."
Matt Smith led Valley with 17 points and seven rebounds.
"I just try to bring the energy to the team," said Smith. "I know I'm not going to be stronger than the rest of the guys but I can be quicker and smarter."
Davon Usher added 14 points and five rebounds while Cordarius Samples put up a career-high 12 points. Darryl Marshall chipped in nine points, including a pair of 3's.
MVSU shot 41.9 percent from the field and made 7 of 20 three-pointers. The Delta Devils went 6 of 11 from the free throw line.
Brandon Dorsett was the lone Grambling player in double-figures with 11 points.
The Delta Devils will be on the road at Alabama A&M on Saturday at 5 p.m.
