Delta Devils' win streak halted by Wildcats

Box Score EVANSTON, Ill. -- Mississippi Valley State's two-game win streak came to an end Monday after an 86-64 loss at Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

MVSU (3-7), who was coming off wins against Longwood and Tougaloo College, was unable to upset the Big Ten squad and the Wildcats stretched their series lead to 4-1 against the Delta Devils. MVSU last defeated Northwestern in 2003.

Valley stayed within striking distance for most of the game and went into halftime down 44-34 after a Sportscenter Top 10-worthy buzzer beater before intermission by MVSU's DeAngelo Priar.

MVSU couldn't, however, cut the lead to single digits in the second half despite a valiant effort by freshman forward James Currington. He cut the lead to 54-44 with 14:04 left in the game, but that would be as close as the Delta Devils would get.

Currington picked up the first double-double of his career with a team-high 14 points and 13 rebounds. He made 4-of-7 shots from the field and converted 6-of-7 free throw attempts. It marked the fourth straight game that he has scored in double figures.

Cameron Dobbs came off the bench to score 12 points on four 3-pointers while Priar chipped in 10 points. Anthony McDonald had nine points for Valley.

Drew Crawford paced Northwestern with 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Sanjay Lumpkin added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Olah and Tre Demps had 18 points apiece.

MVSU shot 40 percent in the first half but only 32.1 in the final 20 minutes. The Delta Devils did, however, take advantage of its free throw opportunities, making 15 of 19 attempts.

The Delta Devils will be off until Dec. 27 when they travel to Washington. That game will be broadcasted live on the Pac-12 Network.
