Delta Devils fall victim to Tigers in final road test

Box Score HOUSTON, Texas -- First half shooting woes and a strong effort from Fred Sturdivant was too much for Mississippi Valley State to overcome Monday as the Delta Devils fell 73-57 in its final road game of the season.

MVSU's Davon Usher led Valley with 25 points, marking his fourth-straight game with at least 20 points. Darryl Marshall added 11 points as MVSU (4-21, 4-11 SWAC) dropped its third-straight game.

Texas Southern (13-14, 12-2 SWAC) took the lead for good with 13 minutes left in the first half on a jumper by Ray Penn. The Tigers then went on a 22-4 run to end the half and take a 35-16 halftime lead. Valley shot just 17.2 percent in the first half.

The Delta Devils got as close as nine points in the second half, but the Tigers responded quickly and kept the lead at double-digits for the rest of the game.

Sturdivant led TSU with 21 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocks while Penn added 14 points and seven assists.

The Tigers outscored Valley 48 to 24 in the paint.

Valley will be back in action Saturday against Jackson State. The game will be broadcasted live on WVSD 91.7 FM and live video will be on www.gwoodlive.com.
