Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Mississippi Valley State will still be on the hunt for its first conference victory Monday following a 93-62 loss at Alabama State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in front of an announced attenadance of 576.
MVSU's Jeffrey Simmons scored in double-figures for the third straight game, but the Delta Devils (4-11, 0-2 SWAC) were unable to fight off a Hornet team that caught fire in the second half. ASU (8-6, 2-1 SWAC) outscored the Delta Devils 52-34 in the second half en route to its second conference victory.
Valley was right on the Hornets' heels through most of the first half and held a 24-21 lead at the 6:34 mark following a Thaddeus Fantleroy layup. But, on the next play, ASU's Bobby Brown took advantage of an MVSU foul on a 3-pointer and tied the game at 24. The Hornets took the lead on a fast dreak dunk by Brown and ASU never relinquished the lead.
The Hornets ended the half on a 15-4 run and went into intermission with a 41-28 lead.
ASU hit its first seven shots of the second half and led by as much as 35 in the second half.
MVSU's Daniel Hurtt had nine first half points and finished with 11 while Anthony McDonald chipped in nine. James Currinton added eight points and four steals despite getting into early foul trouble and Ervin Thomas had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Four ASU players scored in double-figures with Brown leading all scorers with 22.
Valley shots 33.8 percent and made 3-of-20 three-pointers.
The Delta Devils will be at Alabama A&M on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
