BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Daniel Kibet won first place in the men's 5000 Meter Run and the Mississippi Valley State men's track and field team held the top spot after the first day of the SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Delta Devils, however, finished in third place Sunday with 79 points behind Alabama State (96) and Grambling State (98), who claimed the title.
The MVSU women's team placed 7th with 34 points. Alabama State won the championship with 212 points.
MVSU won two categories in the men's competition with Kibet winning the 5000 Meter Run with a time of
8:59.34. Valley's team of Jose Serrano, Earl Winters, Daniel Kibet and Romello Nalepa also finished atop the list in the Men's Distance Medley. Kibet also placed third in the 1 Mile Run with a 4:27.86 finish.
Other standout performances for Valley include Joyce Chumo finished second in the Women's 1 Mile Run with a time of 5:05.36 and the 5000 Meter Run with a time of 17:57.67. Chumo also placed second in the 3000 Meter Run (10:04.64).
MVSU's Cleother Crain was third in the Men's Long Jump and Jatarius Harris finished third in the 60 Meter Dash.
