Box Score GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State saw its three-game win streak come to a close Saturday with a 75-70 loss to Alabama State.
James Currington led Valley (8-15, 4-6 SWAC) with 16 points and seven rebounds while Anthony McDonald chipped in 13 points. Jordan Washington (11 points) and Jeffrey Simmons (10 points) combined to score 21 points off the bench for a MVSU team that shot 46 percent.
It marked the 14th time this season that Currington has scored in double-figures.
After leading through the entire second half, the Hornets tied the game at 66 with 4:24 remaining on a Maurice Strong jumper. ASU retook the lead, 67-66, on a Brandon Graham free throw 2:57 mark.
Then, Valley responded with an Anthony McDonald jump shot with 68-67 with 2:43 on the clock. The back-and-forth continued until ASU's Jamel Waters' free throws put the Hornets up 73-70 with 18 seconds left on the clock.
MVSU's Washington then missed a layup that would have cut ASU's lead to one. The Hornets then took advantage by making two of its three attempts at the charity stripe to seal the win.
Brandon Graham (18 points) was one of four ASU players in double-figures.
MVSU returns to action Monday when they host Alabama A&M at 7:30 p.m.
