MVSU's Kemei wins SWAC individual championship

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State's Scolasticah Kemei and Alice Kimutai were among the top ten finishers at the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship Monday morning.
 
Kemei broke the tape at the finish line for her fourth consecutive win – and third consecutive win at Choctaw Trails. She finished the five-kilometer race with a time of 17 minutes, 18.83 seconds – more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher – to claim the individual championship.
 
As a team, the Devilettes finished fifth with 109 team points. Alabama State won the team championship with 73 points, followed by Grambling State (82), and Prairie View A&M (91).
 
With the win, Kemei claimed the conference's Women's Runner of the Year award; Kemei also won the award as a sophomore in 2017. The top five finish also earned Kemei All-SWAC First Team honors.
 
Kimutai was the second Devilette across the finish line, completing the race with a time of 19:22.62, good for seventh place. Her top ten finish earned her All-SWAC Second Team honors.
 
MVSU's Iyanna Alexander was also among the top 30 participants, finishing the race in 30th place with a time of 21:20.10. Derica Pitters (21:31.51, 35th) and Mya Dumpson (21:43.85, 36th) rounded out Mississippi Valley State's score.
 
Rakia Bell (22:01.79, 41st), Autezia Sellers (22:13.97, 44th), Ajani Williams (22:25.73), and Fantasia Ard (22:28.75) also competed for the Devilettes.
