BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mississippi Valley State men's basketball program will see one of its all-time greats enshrined forever on Friday December 17, 2021 when Marcus Mann is inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame inside the Omni Hotel in Atlanta.
Mann will become the sixth Delta Devil mens basketball player to see his name immortalized among the conference's best alongside George Ivory (Class of 2019), Eric Strothers (Class of 2018), Alphonso "Al" Ford (Class of 2014), Lafayette Stribling (Class of 2006) and William Ware (Class of 1993).
He is one of just five former MVSU student-athletes to be drafted into the NBA, joining Mark Buford, Mark Coleman, Calvin Robinson and Alphonso Ford when he heard his name called in Round 2, 40th overall of the 1996 draft.
Despite the elite company, he ultimately made the personal decision to walk away from the game of basketball after discovering his "calling" in the ministry, currently employed as a Pastor at First Baptist Church in his hometown of Carthage, Mississippi, as well as being the Chaplin of Tyson Foods.
During his two-year tenure in The Delta, the MVSU Hall of Famer averaged 19.3 points and 12.7 rebounds per contest while donning the Green and White.
His senior season will go down in program lore as he led the nation in rebounds with 394 (13.6 average) en route to a SWAC Regular Season and Tournament Title plus a coveted trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Mann was not only a legend on the hardwood but also in the classroom, becoming the first student-athlete in school history to graduate Magna Cum Laude after transferring in from East Central Community College.
