ITTA BENA, Miss. – Next on this year's countdown of Mississippi Valley State's 15 most memorable individual moments of the 2021-22 athletic calendar is moment number 14 on the list as junior specialist
Orlando Fernandez was selected as the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, November 15 for his performance versus Alabama State on Senior Day.
Fernandez had a career-best 398 kickoff yards with two touchbacks opposite the Hornets, converted on his lone field goal attempt (37 yards), made five of his six PAT tries (the one miss was blocked) and skyrocketed three punts that went 50-plus yards.
On the afternoon, the native of Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico connected on seven punts for a total of 311 yards and an average net of 44.43 yards while coffin-cornering ASU three times at the 18, 15, and one yard lines.
The former Cisco College transfer was responsible for every punt and field goal attempt in 2021 as well as all but four kickoffs, earning Phil Steele All-SWAC Second Team honors after ranking 17th nationally in punting (43.2) and 40th for field goals per game (1.00).
