The Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) track and field teams delivered an impressive showing at the KMS Invitational held on January 19th in Birmingham, Alabama. Competing against a talented field of athletes, the Delta Devils and Devilettes showcased resilience, skill, and determination across multiple events.
We had a few athletes that had a standout weekend with setting personal records (PR), and season best (SB). Leading the way for the men was Emilio Blackbourne, who placed second in the 60m with a time of 6.83, setting a new PR. Donte Reed, placed 6th in the men's shot put, while Jadarius Townes placed 8th - a new PR. Townes also placed 10th in the weight throw. Henry Espy recorded a PR in the 400m. The men finished 5th in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR).
For the ladies, Aniyah Thomas placed 2nd in the weight throw and Raine Jenkins finished 7th in the long jump.
Overall, Mississippi Valley had an awesome showing during their season opener.
Head Coach Michael Snapp stated, "I am feeling really good after the first competition. I asked the athletes to compete, and that is what they did. This is a young team, and we are still working to find our way; however, I have noticed some improvement attributed to their commitment and dedication to the sport. We had a few athletes set personal records. This is great because it means we are moving in the right direction. I am proud of this group and excited about where we are going. We will continue to improve and make gains throughout the season."
The meet highlighted the depth of talent within MVSU's track and field program, with strong performances across both sprint and distance events as well as field disciplines. The coaching staff praised the team's efforts and looks forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming competitions.
Stay tuned as Mississippi Valley State continues their season with a drive for excellence and a commitment to representing MVSU proudly on and off the track. The next meet will be February 7-8, where the teams will be back in Birmingham, Alabama, at the UAB Vulcan Invite on the 7th and Green and Gold Invite on the 8th.
