HATTIESBURG, Miss. (March 30, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State track and field continued their outdoor season competing at the Southern Mississippi Invite at the Bell Track and Field Stadium. MVSU won the women's shot put and men's 4x100m relay while placing top-three in the men's 400m, men's 5000m, women's 100m hurdles, women's shot put and women's discus events.
WOMEN'S
The Devilettes finished with 11 top-10 performances, six new personal records, and four season-best performances. Sophomore Tyefah Saunders won the shot put finals tossing 14.71m setting a new personal best mark in the event. Junior Tiara DeRosa also recorded a personal record throw of 14.30m in the shot put placing second. DeRosa broke her native country of Bermuda's national record in the women's shot put event with her throw of 14.30m. Sophomore ZaBasjia Price also competed in the shot put and notched a new personal record of 9.59m.
DeRosa finished third in the discus with a season-best mark of 46.16m. Price rounded out the MVSU field events with a ninth-place finish in the high jump reaching 1.45m.
On the track, sophomore Mya Dumpson led the Devilettes with a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles clocking a new personal record time of 15.15 seconds. Dumpson ran a season-best time in the 400m hurdles placing fourth at 1:05.52.
Junior Derica Pitters placed ninth in both the 800m and 1500m events. Pitters ran a season-best time of 2:27.75 in the 800m and 5:08.11 in the 1500m. Senior Iyanna Alexander finished just behind Pitters in the 800m with her top-time of the season finishing 10
th running 2:20.80. In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Autezia Sellers (13:26.62) was seventh and freshman Rakia Ball (14:11.20) was eighth.
Sophomore Ajani Williams ran 57.53 in the 400m placing 10
th while sophomore Markayla Jones ran a personal record time of 1:13.20. Freshman Imani Walker competed in the 200m and recorded a personal best time of 28.86.
MEN'S
The Delta Devils had six top-10 finishes, two new personal records and one season-best performance at the Southern Miss. Invite. The men's 4x100m relay team of freshman Samuel Gardner, senior Laval Davis, sophomore Jeremy Murry, and freshman Christoper Bailey won their event with a solid time of 41.93.
Bailey ran in the 400m and placed second with a time of 47.22 while Davis was 10
th with a time of 49.67. Freshman Stanley Rop (15:51.46) and senior Timothy Misoy (17:04.28) finished second and third, respectively in the 5000m. Sophomore Jaleel Turner placed 10
th in the 800m with a time of 1:59.63 and was 14
th in the 1500m with his fastest time of the season at 4:14.74.
In the field events, freshmen Kiion Smith and William Bradley both set new personal records in the shot put. Smith placed sixth tossing 12.56m while Bradley was 11
th at 11.27m. In the discus, Smith placed ninth measuring 39.31m and in the high jump sophomore Jamarius Shaw placed eighth at 1.78m.
MVSU track and field returns to the track on April 5-6 for the Jim Mize Invitational hosted by LA Tech University in Ruston, La.
