Women’s Track & Field Wins Shot Put & Discus Events at Jim Mize Invitational

RUSTON, La. (April 5-6, 2019) - Mississippi Valley State women's track and field teams traveled to the Jim Mize Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech where the Devilettes won both the discus and shot put events.

WOMEN
MVSU placed six in the top-five while setting six new personal records and three-season-best performances. Sophomore Tyefah Saunders won the shot put with a new personal record throw of 15.07m. Saunders also competed in the javelin and placed second measuring 35.90m. Junior Tiara DeRosa also shined alongside Saunders in a pair of throwing events.

DeRosa won the discus with a season-best throw of 47.95m and placed second in the shot put at 12.64m.

Sophomore ZaBasjia Price had a personal record throw in the javelin of 31.15m placing sixth.

On the track, junior Derica Pitters placed third in the 800m with a season-best time of 2;21.47. Senior Iyanna Alexander was sixth in the 800m running 2:27.16. Sophomore Mya Dumpson competed in the hurdles and placed fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:05.04) and eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.48). Her time in the 400m hurdles was a season-best.

In the 200m, sophomore Ajani Williams clocked a new personal record time of 25.06 placing 10th while junior Jala Allen ran a personal record time of 26.08. Junior Jada Allen ran a personal record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.76 and freshman Rakia Ball recorded a new personal record in the 1500m run at 5:43.77.

MEN'S
The Delta Devils had a strong showing at the Jim Mize Invitational with eight top-five finishes, three new personal records, and one season-best performance.

Sophomore Jaleel Turner had the highest finish amongst the men placing second in the 800m running a personal best time of 1:58.82. Freshman Stanley Rop was third in the
5000m at 15:38.57 while senior Laval Davis placed fourth in the 400m (47.92) and fifth in the 200m (21.40).

In the hurdles, freshman Anthony Mosley ran a personal record time of 15.75 in the 110m hurdles placing fifth. Junior Nicholas Alexander was sixth in the 400m hurdles clocking his best time of the season at 56.30.

Freshman Kiion Smith had a breakout meet for the Delta Devils in the field events placing third in the discus with a personal record throw of 41.25m. In the shot put, Smith was fourth measuring 12.47m and fourth in the javelin at 24.61m.

MVSU's track and field teams will compete at the Joe Walker Invitational hosted by Ole Miss, on Apr, 12-13 in Oxford, Miss.
