ITTA BENA, Miss. – Next on this year's countdown of Mississippi Valley State's ten most memorable wins of the 2021-22 athletic calendar is win number five on the list as softball had its biggest offensive outing of the season in the opener, launching a season-best three homers, walking a season-high seven times, and stealing five bases in a 10-6 triumph.
Junior
Naomi Drake stole the spotlight from her senior teammates, driving home the game-winning runs with an inside-the-park grand slam in the third to give the Devilettes an 8-4 advantage. It was Drake's first career home run of any kind, gave her a career-high four RBIs and four total bases.
Classmate
Keisha White was the only player with multiple base knocks, crushing a two-run blast to straightaway centerfield on top of an RBI single for a season-best three ribbies and five total bases as well as swiping a base.
Senior
Jaylon Davis provided a glimpse of the success to follow, kicking off the afternoon with a leadoff round-tripper, finishing the day by scoring twice after walking then snagging second base soon thereafter.
Seniors
Brianna Alston and
Cailyn Peterson combined to cross the dish thrice, slap a pair of singles, and the former contributing a run batted in.
Morgan Gutierrez came on to begin the fifth and completely shut down the Lady Rattlers, keeping FAMU off the scoreboard over three sparkling frames while surrendering just three hits and whiffing one.
A'tajua Wren took home the pitching win in the circle with a strikeout and four runs given up in four innings.
