MADISON, Ala. – Next on this year's countdown of Mississippi Valley State's 15 most memorable individual moments of the 2021-22 athletic calendar is moment number ten as sophomore shortstop
Maury Weaver had a Mother's Day to remember, launching a holiday homer in tribute to his late grandmother Eloise McCoy and in front of his own mother, Delinia Weaver, on Sunday, May 8 at Alabama A&M.
What made Weaver's two-run blast in the top of the seventh inning even sweeter was the fact that it was his first career long ball at the NCAA level as well as his first dinger of the year, adding a double and another run scored to his stat line in which he totaled a career-best six bases.
Known more for his speed than his power in 2022 (18th in steals per game, 34th in total steals nationally), led the speedy Devils with 25 stolen bases in 27 chances (92.6%). The Trinity Christian High School product ranked second on the ballclub in most offensive categories including hits (42), runs scored (33), total bases (55), and doubles (6) behind teammate
Dreylin Holmes to go along with a 0.263 batting average, 19 RBIs, and 14 walks.
Prior to the season, the Rust College transfer changed his number to #18 in honor of Mrs. McCoy and dedicated the season to her when she unfortunately passed away in August. He plans to cement the baseball on her grave marker when he returns to his hometown of Fayetteville, Georgia after running past the outfield wall to retrieve the ball himself so nobody else could lay a hand on his touching memorial.
