BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Next on this year's countdown of Mississippi Valley State's 15 most memorable individual moments of the 2021-22 athletic calendar is moment number six as freshman
Darrione Joseph set the conference on fire in her debut campaign, claiming a pair of medals and SWAC Track Athlete of the Week awards as well as an indoor All-SWAC Second Team selection.
The Marrero, Louisiana native officially entered the scene with a breakout performance at the KMS Invitational, winning the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.94 seconds as well as the 4x200m relays at 1:48.10, plus a third-place finish during the 4x400m relays (4:08.88). The outing paved the way for her first ever SWAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor on January 28.
The following meet, the Samford Invitational, saw her reach the finals in the 60m hurdles once again in which she claimed sixth (8.91) before going on to win the silver at the SWAC Indoor Championships with a 8.73-second 60m hurdle showing to wrap up the indoor portion of the regular season.
Joseph carried over the momentum into the outdoor opener at Rhodes College, making her 100m hurdles debut by winning the event after clocking in at 14.15.
She scored again in the 100m hurdles at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays, placing sixth (13.99), then one-upping herself the following weekend in Hattiesburg by placing fifth at a pace of 14.52.
The West Jefferson High School alum got back into the winning spirit in the Joe Walker Invitational as she earned gold in the 100m hurdles at 14.03 to catch the attention of the conference office with her second SWAC Track Athlete of the Week accolade on April 14.
The five-foot-eight hurdler made her final adjustments before the SWAC Outdoor Championships during the ULM Classic as she ended the 100m hurdles with a fourth-place finish in a time of 13.93 then promptly accumulating her first silver medal among her conference peers for her 14.04 100m hurdle performance at PVAMU.
